Doorways NewsEast Coast Horse Ride Raising Awareness and Support for Doorways
Mr. Morris and Dr. Lackamy (and their horses) recently passed through Washington, DC on their 1,641 mile east coast horse ride to raise awareness of domestic violence and to support for Doorways. Doorways met with the riders and horses to share our thanks and wish them the best for the remainder of their ride from Maine to Florida. (Learn more about the duo’s trek by clicking HERE.) Please join us in thanking Mr. Morris by supporting his cause (click HERE). Make sure you select “Donation on behalf of Saddle up for Good” as the donation category. We Did It!!Thank you to each of you who contributed to the Doorways Campaign to Do More. Your generous gifts and pledges helped Doorways meet the ambitious goal set by the national Kresge Foundation to raise $800,000 by June 30, 2008. With this challenge goal met, we are due to receive $400,000 from the Kresge Foundation this summer. These funds will be invaluable in allowing Doorways to continue to provide life-saving care, hope and safety for thousands of women and families experiencing domestic violence and homelessness in our community. Thank You! Freddie Mac Foundation Family Home Opens to Clients
Three years of dreams, dedication and development by Doorways’ Executive Director Linda Dunphy and her staff have finally come to fruition. This past November, Doorways held a dedication for the Freddie Mac Foundation Family Home and in December, families started moving in to this place that many will call home for short periods during the years to come. While the building is complete, there is still much to do. The food pantry needs to be filled every week (not only with food, but toiletries, cleaning supplies and paper products); utility bills paid; critical support services to be provided and much more. There are many ways to help. Please consider a cash contribution or in-kind gift to help Doorways open the doors to a new life for homeless women, children and families. Your support will also help Doorways meet our Kresge Foundation Challenge whereby Doorways must raise $800,000 by July 1, 2008 in order to leverage a one-time $400,000 grant. For more information on the Kresge Challenge and how you can make a difference in the lives of homeless women, children and families, please contact Scott Perkins the Development Director at sperkins@doorwaysva.org, 703-522-8858, ext. 32. Community Service Opportunity!Help Doorways Back To School Drive this Summer! Each year, Doorways outfits the children accessing Doorways services with the supplies they need to have a successful start back to school. With the re-opening of our Freddie Mac Foundation Family Home and the expansion of our HomeStart Supportive Housing Program, we are serving twice as many children as before. We are expecting to supply 60 + backpacks this August to school age children and youth. This summer, Doorways will be conducting collection drives with individuals, families, and community organizations to obtain items such as gift cards for new clothing and school supplies, backpacks, lunchboxes, and generic school supplies. If you are interested in participating as and individual or group, please email clopez@doorwaysVA.org |
